Concerns About Asbestos Removal Safety and Oversight
I hired this company to professionally remove asbestos wrapping from an HVAC duct near a floor register in my home. Unfortunately, the experience left me with concerns about their safety procedures, attention to detail, and supervision.
During the removal, the worker accidentally punctured the plastic containment barrier around the upstairs floor register, creating a hole approximately 1–2 cm wide. The hole remained open for approximately five minutes while dry asbestos-containing paper was being handled nearby. I was standing directly beside the opening.
I was the one who noticed the hole and brought it to the worker’s attention. Rather than immediately inspecting and repairing it, he initially dismissed my concern and said it was fine. I had to insist that he examine the opening before he finally acknowledged the issue and taped it shut. Had I not been present and paying attention, I question whether the breach would have been identified or repaired at all.
Even more concerning, there was only one worker performing the removal in the basement, without the project manager present to oversee the work. When I questioned the lack of supervision, I was told the project manager had too many other jobs to attend to. It was only after I called the company to express my dissatisfaction that the project manager came to the house and remained to supervise the rest of the job.
Although the company used plastic containment and a negative-air system, I was disappointed by how casually the worker initially treated a breach in the containment barrier during asbestos removal.
After the work was completed, the register area was cleaned, but the surrounding upstairs flooring, including hardwood and nearby carpeting was not. No air testing was performed, and I was told it would cost an additional $500.
I have video documentation of the incident.
I hired professionals specifically because asbestos removal requires specialized training, careful containment, and strict attention to safety. Instead, I found myself identifying a containment breach, insisting that it be repaired, and requesting additional supervision.
My biggest concern is what would have happened if I hadn’t been there watching. When hiring an asbestos-abatement company, homeowners should be able to trust that safety procedures will be followed without having to personally monitor the work.
Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this company without significant improvements in its oversight, communication, and handling of containment issues.

Christine, thank you for sharing your concerns. We take our customers’ and workers’ safety seriously, and we’re sorry that your experience left you feeling you needed to personally monitor the work. Your concern about the cut in the plastic barrier—and the initial response when you raised it—deserves our attention.
For this project, we installed a glovebag containment at the first-floor duct and a HEPA-filtered negative-air containment around the duct being removed in the basement. Negative pressure is intended to draw air into the contained work area through a filtration system. It is a safeguard but does not replace the need to promptly inspect and repair damage to the barrier.
Air testing was offered before the project began and was declined. This explains why testing was not performed, but it does not diminish the importance of your concerns.
After you contacted our office, the project manager came to your home and remained for the rest of the work. We also called that same day after completion and left a voicemail inviting you to discuss any questions or concerns.
We would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you and discuss how we can address your concerns.
