I attended Randy Dickens’ real estate investment class on October 19 and had cleared my entire day to be there. Unfortunately, a construction project for a builder I work with failed inspection, and I was asked to communicate with the inspector and help get the issue resolved as quickly as possible to avoid delaying an upcoming closing. I was texting the builder during class and stepped outside to take a call from the inspector about five minutes before the lunch break. Randy then came outside and demanded that I should be inside while the sponsors were speaking. I explained that I wasn’t planning on eating the provided lunch, but he proceeded to tell me to get off my phone while I was actively on a call with the inspector during the break (she then called me to make sure I was okay because of how aggressive he sounded on the phone) . He also accused me of being on my phone too much and stated that if there wasn’t “blood or a flood,” it wasn’t an emergency. What frustrated me most was the lack of understanding and the apparent inconsistency in how the situation was handled. I observed multiple attendees using their phones throughout the class to write and send real estate offers, yet I felt singled out for handling a legitimate, time-sensitive work matter. As a real estate professional himself, I would have expected Randy to understand that not every emergency involves “blood or a flood.” In this industry, construction issues, inspection failures, and closing deadlines are legitimate concerns that can have financial consequences if not addressed promptly. Sometimes, a timely phone call or response can make the difference between keeping a transaction on schedule and delaying a closing. I would have hoped for more empathy and understanding from someone who works in the same industry, rather than having my professional responsibilities dismissed simply because they didn’t fit his definition of an emergency. I understand the importance of being present and respectful during a class, but I also believe professionalism, understanding, and consistency should go both ways.
