I was surprised at how quick the turnaround was for digitalization from VHS and old format DVD's. Also really affordable. Thanks for giving us access to these memories again!

Good service, but had long wait for digitizing PAL tapes. Didn't charge for one degraded tape.

Let me preface this review by saying that I think Dan the owner is grappling with some personal challenges that is affecting the quality of his business. Nevertheless, it's important that people who are considering using Familyography are aware of the potential missteps they may be in for should they choose to use their photo digitization services. I brought in about 390 family photos for scanning in late 2025. When I reviewed the digitized files, many had visible defects: color tinting artifacts on faces (one eye red, the other blue) and horizontal scanlines that weren't in the originals. I reported the issues in December and it took nearly a month to get a response, which I'll chalk up to the holidays. Dan met me at the store in January, acknowledged the problems, and took my physical photos back to redo the scans. He estimated a couple of weeks. What followed was almost four months of delays. I'd check in, get a promise of "next week," and then hear nothing. Excuses ranged from weather to illness to family matters. At one point he admitted he hadn't even started on the redo. My physical photos were held the entire time. In early March, after yet another week of silence, I filed a credit card dispute just to get a response. That worked. Dan issued a refund for the scanning portion and his Columbus associate returned my physical photos. I withdrew the dispute in good faith. A month later, I checked the "redo" scans he'd uploaded. They appeared identical to the originals with the same artifacts and same defects. When I pointed this out, Dan said he'd hand-edited every scan and would call me the following week. He never called. The pattern of broken promises and non-communication made this an exhausting experience. I'd recommend looking elsewhere for photo scanning services.

Response from the owner · 6 months ago

Mr. DeHart project consisted of photograph scanning and videotape digitizing. Initially, I was under the impression that he has concerns about many of the scans, and told him that I would review them. This took longer than expected. I responded to some of Mr. Dehart's emails, but not all. My review of the scans showed that only a handful of the scans had issues, which were caused by the deterioration of the original photos coupled with color restoration tech that caused some color to bleed. I nevertheless photoshopped those photos, and other that had scratched and blemishes. Lastly, I returned Mr, DeHart the full amount of the cost for scanning all of his photos to make amends for any perceived delay. Nevertheless, several weeks later, Mr. DeHart made an additional complaint, and rather than tell him that the full return of his money was the end of it, I offered to review things again. While Mr. Dehart offers an opinion about me, I choose to not respond and do likewise. This is business. Mr DeHart was a rare but unhappy customer, and we gave him a full refund even though he received considerable value from our work. We have scanned hundred of thousands of photographs for thousands of customers. We care about each and every one, including Mr DeHart.

Great small business for digitizing your family memorabilia: reel-to-reel film and audio tape, slides, photographs, cassette tapes, records, VHS, DVDs, and more.

Familyography is a wonderful resource! They are friendly, fast, and a pleasure to work with. I recently brought in an old satellite receiver with a news segment recorded on it and they creatively found a way to get the recording off of the receiver and digitize it. I'm so thankful for this business!

My dentist used to be across the street from Familyography, so on a whim I took a bunch of VHS tapes in to have transferred to DVD/digital. My dentist moved in the meantime and I totally forgot. 3 years later, when I remembered, my stuff was still there and they were very gracious about my forgetfulness.
