I highly recommend Dr. Velma Vega-Hughes to anyone needing and looking for psychiatric help. Besides being very caring and empathetic, she is very knowledgeable, and takes the time to address all concerns. Talking with Dr. Hughes is very much like talking with a supportive friend. She allowed me to express my feelings, worries, and fears without feeling judged. Most importantly, I felt safe and trusted her treatment plans for my mental health. Thank you Dr. Velma Vega-Hughes.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your experience. It means more than you know.
Serving those who serve our communities is a privilege, and I am truly honored to have been a part of your mental health journey. Law enforcement professionals face extraordinary challenges and are often exposed to situations that most people cannot imagine. The emotional impact of witnessing trauma, loss, and crisis on a regular basis can be significant, and seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
At Fig Tree Behavioral Wellness, our mission is to provide compassionate, individualized care that helps people regain hope, resilience, and overall well-being. Hearing that you have found healing, growth, and the confidence to support others through their own struggles is incredibly rewarding.
Thank you for placing your trust in me and for your dedication to both your profession and those you lead. We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of your journey and appreciate your recommendation.
Wishing you continued success, health, and wellness.
Dr Hughes is an amazing practitioner and I've made huge strides under her care. I struggle from bipolar disorder and major anxiety that crippled me for years until I started seeing Dr Hughes. She has worked with me slowly making adjustments to my medications until we've finally found the right combination that works for me. I'm now a completely different person since I started seeing Dr Hughes and I would recommend anyone to start under her care!

Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words. It truly means a great deal to hear how much progress you’ve made, and I’m honored to have been part of your journey. Your commitment, patience, and openness throughout the process have been key to finding what works best for you.
Seeing you regain a sense of stability and confidence is exactly why I do this work, and I’m so glad you’re feeling like yourself again. Thank you for trusting me with your care and for recommending my practice to others. Here’s to your continued progress.
Have been with Velma for way over a year. She is very understanding and validates all my concerns. She takes all my issues very seriously and is always open to my ideas or suggestions of my treatment plan. I was at the worst point in my life when I started my appointments with Velma. Now I can say I have reached, what I believe to be, the most stable part of my life.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It has been a privilege to work with you and to be part of your journey. I’m so glad to hear that you feel heard, supported, and more stable, and I truly appreciate the trust you’ve placed in me.
I highly recommend NOT choosing this place for psychiatric services. I was a patient there in 2024 and only had 2 appointments before I was ignored completely. Any time I tried to make an appointment I either couldn’t get through to them and if I did, they would supposedly schedule an appointment, but would never be called on the day of. This happened 3 times before I gave up completely and had to go find another psychiatrist. As if this already isn’t bad enough, Dr. Velma herself was actually problematic. I remember her being very detached and condescending when it came to diagnosing me with my conditions. I have PTSD and I knew it and didn’t need any diagnostic tool to tell me that, but she wouldn’t consider me for it because according to her you can only qualify for PTSD if you have had death in the family. I was completely shocked when she told me this. I almost stopped seeing her after that, but I kept going because I didn’t know what else to do as it was important for me to have my conditions documented for a legal case I had. Psychiatry in the valley is already so bad and I thought I must be overreacting based on how good all the reviews talk about her, but never make the mistake I did. She is not empathetic at all and her unprofessional behavior trickles down to the front staff who give you the run around.

We are sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with your experience back in 2024. Our clinic is committed to providing compassionate, individualized mental health care, and we take concerns regarding communication and scheduling seriously.
Because we respect patient privacy, we cannot discuss any individual’s care publicly. However, we do want to clarify that PTSD can arise from many different forms of trauma, and we would never intentionally dismiss or minimize a patient’s lived experiences.
Our office schedules appointments in advance, and patients are encouraged to contact us directly regarding any scheduling questions or follow-up needs. We remain available via phone and email, and we have systems in place to notify patients of any closures or changes to office operations.
We are continually working to improve communication and ensure patients receive timely support. We genuinely wish you the best in your continued care and wellness journey.
The guy who answers the phone is very rude. He has a bad tone. It’s hard to get through. Calls with messages are not returned typically. Twice he did call and didnt day who he was or where he was calling from or what it was about. The second time I guessed. In supposed to be having an appointment right now on a call. I haven’t received a call or instruction on how to get in touch for my session. The office mail box has been full for weeks now.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconvenience you have experienced.
At Fig Tree Behavioral Wellness, we strive to provide compassionate, professional, and responsive care to every individual we serve. We are concerned to hear about your experience regarding communication, returned calls, and difficulty connecting for your scheduled appointment. This is certainly not the level of service we aim to provide.
We take concerns about staff interactions and communication processes very seriously and will review the issues you have raised, including phone etiquette, message handling, and appointment communication procedures. We also understand how frustrating it can be when voicemail systems are unavailable or when appointment instructions are unclear.
We have communicated with all active patients through both email and text message notifications regarding my ongoing medical leave. As previously communicated, I underwent my fifth major abdominal surgery on April 23, 2026, and have been operating remotely since November 19, 2025, following my fourth surgery. Due to the complexity of my medical condition, I was referred to Austin for specialized evaluation and treatment and have remained here since early February to continue receiving care. Throughout this time, our practice has made every effort to keep patients informed of temporary changes to our communication and office operations.
Because patient privacy is extremely important to us, we cannot discuss any specific details in a public forum. We would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you directly so that we can better understand your concerns and work toward a resolution. Please contact our office by email at [email protected] and include your preferred contact information so that a member of our management team or I can reach out to you personally.
Thank you again for bringing these concerns to our attention. Feedback such as yours helps us identify areas for improvement and better serve our patients and community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Velma Hughes, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC

Hello Minerva, I, Dr. Hughes, left you a voicemail this afternoon because you did not answer your phone for your visit. Please call our office or email Anna to [email protected], as we all check our emails several times daily. Thank you for your 5 star review Joseph! We are here to help you, always!
GIVE ME MY PAPERWORK BACK YOUR NOT EVEN MY PROVIDER REMEMBER YOU DROPPED ME B4 EVEN MEETING
you claimed all these bells and whistles all these great clouds and sunshine but when someone that really needs help you don’t even bother to read the paperwork you require B4 the visit!
BOY DID I LEARN A LESSON I WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN I WILL TELL EVERY DOCTOR WHY AND WHO kept my paperwork without being my provider!!
I had an appointment with this facility, the nurse practitioner, in October 2024. I filled out the paperwork to its entirety as required they said! with all my personal information dropped off and they’re sliding incoming mail slot where it said too. I called a week prior to my visit to confirm and they said they didn’t have my paperwork FIRST RED FLAG 🚩 . Then they called and said that she couldn’t see me because I had an implant that managed my pain, SECOND RED FLAG 🚩 I explained to the secretary, that if she had taken the time to read my paperwork, that implant had been explanted on 7/2024. So now I can’t get my paperwork back, so be careful on releasing your personal information to this “medical office”
THIRD RED FLAG 🚩
They must screen their calls because every time I call to get my paperwork, they never answer their phone. I leave message after message and they never return my call. They promised to give me a referral to some other psychologist or psychiatrist. I didn’t hold my breath on that one, either.. I didn’t want to do a Google review, but I’m hoping they see this and I get my paperwork back
boy if something goes wrong with my identity
I know where to look I guess ugh
