Fast response, but extremely overpriced for a few minutes of work. I called this mobile service because I was stuck on a generator repair and needed help loosening a single belt tensioner bolt with a thin wrench. To his credit, the mechanic arrived within an hour and successfully loosened the bolt. However, charging $150 for literally for a few minutes of work without providing any upfront disclosure of a high minimum fee feels unconscionable. I did all the disassembly and reassembly myself. While I appreciate the quick response time, taking advantage of someone stranded and under stress with such an exorbitant charge for a single bolt is very disappointing. Make sure to ask for a strict price quote before they drive out.
I appreciate you acknowledging that I arrived quickly and resolved the problem. However, describing my work as simply loosening one bolt leaves out much of what I actually did. I released the tensioner, removed the alternator, installed the replacement alternator, and reinstalled the tensioner and belt. I also offered to complete the remaining reassembly, but you declined. After the work was completed, you put $50 in my pocket. We had never agreed on a $50 price, so I’m not sure why you assumed that amount would cover the visit and the work. You also did not ask for a quote before I came out or started working. The $150 charge covered traveling from Pasadena to your location in Van Nuys—approximately 20 miles one way—with around 40 minutes spent getting to you, and the work itself. My 15 years of experience allowed me to complete the work quickly. That efficiency does not reduce the value of the service. You are entitled to your opinion about the price, but future customers deserve an accurate description of the work performed. This was a mobile service visit involving removal and installation of an alternator—not a $150 charge for a single bolt.
