Horstmann Homestead Farm at a glance

Reviewers consistently praise the property's scenic grounds, well-maintained facilities, and helpful staff who assist with event logistics and guest comfort. However, several low-star reviews highlight recurring issues with management, including disputes over security deposit deductions, double-booking errors, and conflicts regarding power usage or event end times. These complaints suggest that while the physical venue is highly rated, some clients experienced friction with the owners during the booking or post-event phases.

Review from a mother of the bride. This is a mixed review so please read thoroughly and make your best judgement based on sheer facts. Good parts: Appearance: 10/10 absolutely stunning. The grounds are impeccable and beautifully maintained. The chapel is adorable, the “hen house” where the bride and the girls get ready is adorable and well kept. Where the groom and groomsmen get ready is below the barn and very rustic and roomy. The reception barn is amazing, well ventilated and available to decorate however you want with the restrictions set forth by the owners. Bathrooms are kept clean and tidy. Bar area is well maintained. And when you are looking to book the facility, everyone SEEMS very accommodating. Prices everywhere are high for booking venues and this was affordable at best. A little tucked out of the way but rustic and charming. Now …. The bad parts. The owners babysit every single aspect of what is to be YOUR special day. They LITERALLY sit or stand with folded arms and watch over set up, they stay around outside the venue watching everyone’s move like hawks and don’t give you the privacy of what YOU paid for. More than one occasion numerous guests at my daughter’s wedding commented how rude these owners were by literally encroaching themselves in the wedding day. Seriously, they were outside sitting watching us all or walking around surveying everyone’s move all day long. ALL DAY LONG. From set up, CEREMONY, reception and tear down. It was ridiculous! And more than that, the owners took it upon themselves to reprimand grown adults like rogue teenagers at a barn dance. Oh heck no! Nothing was said about hovering in the contract. When it comes to the contract …. They don’t stick to it but they get so under your skin you just want out. When you sign the contract and need a day ahead to set up/have rehearsal run through and dinner, it clearly states clean up AFTER the ceremony reception the FOLLOWING day by noon. But that doesn’t matter to them as they will stand outside and order you to clean up and be gone by midnight that day of your wedding. It’s happened to my cousin and now to my daughter. We have the contract. They broke it but all of us were so irritated by the owners behavior we just wanted out. There are no cameras to speak of if they are so intent on watching over their property. No one wants a chaperone at their wedding let alone grown adults who have paid a heavy penny for a once in a lifetime event. A wedding and planning are stressful enough without all the BS these owners brought with them. I don’t recommend this place. I really don’t. But IF you decide to look at it and book them, CLEARLY state you won’t tolerate their hovering and to STICK TO THE CONTRACT or you can sue them for breaching that contract. I guarantee they won’t have you sign and refuse your business. I don’t want any family to lose their business but if these owners don’t change their business practices, they won’t be in business much longer. I’m glad this is all over but an honest review was needed and justified. Read all reviews good and bad on this place. I give it 2/5 stars. Just don’t do it. Pay extra for something more professional or find a family or friend with a farm if that’s what you’re looking for. Good luck.

While our event itself went smoothly and was beautiful, the post-event business and financial practices of this venue are deeply concerning. Future couples should be extremely cautious regarding their cash deposit policies.Following our wedding, management withheld $30 from our cash security deposit, claiming we made an "unauthorized alteration" by adjusting an existing nail in a pre-existing hole on a structural beam, an area nowhere near the window sill they initially cited. When we pressed for an itemized repair invoice or photographic proof of baseline conditions before our event, management could not provide them. In an email, they explicitly admitted they created the $30 charge on the spot because "the cost needed to be determined." Members of our party also directly overheard staff on-site debating how much they were going to choose to charge us.Furthermore, their administrative timeline is completely unacceptable. I emailed a week after our wedding to check on our deposit and was ignored. We had to call them to get an answer, which only happened after they had already hosted at least two subsequent major events in that exact same space. Their refund check wasn't even drafted until September 20th, over a week after our September 12th event. By failing to inspect the property in a timely manner and letting hundreds of other guests use the room first, they completely broke the chain of custody. On top of the financial issues, the on-site staff breached their contracted duties (the owners themselves) Per our agreement, two staff members were to be present to provide event support and maintain safety. Instead, they spent hours slacking off playing card games and openly consumed our paid event catering without our permission or consent. (Looking at other online reviews, it appears multiple other couples have documented identical experiences with staff eating their food).they also made comments about our event in an area our guests heard this and were uncomfortable. Because this venue insists strictly on a cash/check-only model, preventing standard banking or credit card consumer protections, refuses to issue official invoices, and appears to systematically charge clients arbitrary fees for pre-existing fixtures, we have filed a formal consumer complaint for unfair trade practices with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). Be incredibly diligent with your paperwork and photo documentation if you choose to book here.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve been to several events at Horseman Homestead — and even hosted one myself — and every single time has been wonderful. The family who owns and runs it works incredibly hard to make sure every event is special and memorable. They’re kind, caring people who go above and beyond for their guests. I saw a negative review below mine, and honestly, it says more about that person than it does about this business. You have to remember, this is their family home too. Just because it’s your special day doesn’t mean you can treat the property like it’s yours to do whatever you want. As long as you respect the space and follow the simple guidelines in your agreement, you’ll have an amazing experience here — just like I have, time and time again. Highly recommend Horseman Homestead — great people, beautiful property, and a place that truly cares about making your memories special.

The venue is beautiful, no doubt. My daughter booked and paid for the venue and ordered save the dates, only to learn from another bride to be, that her friend had the venue booked for the same day my daughter did. Understandably, the venue was given to the people who first booked the venue. My daughter wanted to book the venue for an alternate date and hoped that because of the inconvenience and cost of items ordered with the original date selected on them, the owners would give her a bit of a discount (at minimum, the money she paid for save the dates). The owner was not willing to compensate ANYTHING even though it was their mistake and because she was terribly rude as well my daughter decided to look elsewhere. Fast forward, we attended another wedding here recently. Again, beautiful venue, but I believe the owner (wife) missed her calling as a drill sergeant. The owner followed guests around making people feel uncomfortable. I believe it must have been divine intervention that my daughter did not get this venue and instead had a very relaxed and even more beautiful venue at Country Reflections in Sparta. The owner at Country Reflections is THE BEST of THE BEST. There is way more room and without feeling micromanaged.
