Shane did an amazing job and in short time a transcription of my friend's song from an audio recording that captured the song perfectly so now he has the sheet music he can perform and share with others! I look forward to working with Shane on many more projects!
Shane is not only an incredible musician and conductor, he is also a fantastic teacher. In a recent workshop with both youth and adults, Shane expertly taught to every level of understanding. His metaphors are always on point and creative. He was very efficient with our time together, and provided a delightful blend of instruction and humor. His expertise in the art of creating music makes him a very effective teacher and an impactful mentor.
Shane is a very accomplished musician, a thoughtful and thorough teacher, and a conductor who not only knows the music and territory, but is able to clearly and masterfully convey the intent to the orchestra and audience in friendly and meaningful ways. My kids loved taking his conducting class which really augmented their understanding of and appreciation for music.
Shane is a consummate professional, highly talented at getting the most from a variety of voices, and has made our choir sound phenomenal (and way above our natural skill level) for the past few years. I manage an all-volunteer nonprofit ensemble of 200+ musicians and Shane both teaches and directs us with amazing results. He is uniquely good at working with instrumentalists and vocalists alike, including our soloists, choir, and a full symphony orchestra, and I learn something valuable at nearly every rehearsal even with years of choral experience. I would highly recommend Shane to any organization, so long as you don't take him away from mine!
Shane is a patient and gifted music teacher. I have seen him conduct the orchestra at my former middle school and transform his students into competent musicians who not only play music, but understand and love it. He helped transform the program. He inspired me to want to take up the piano again when we inherited a piano after I retired from education. He has helped me find joy in music and a level of understanding of how music is both played and created. It's been difficult to learn and relearn after so long an absence from the keyboard, but he has never given up on me and has noticed and applauded my efforts. I could not ask for a more skilled and caring teacher.
Shane is an exceptionally gifted arranger, vocalist, musician, and conductor. I sing with Witness Music Utah, where he serves as our creative director, and although we have worked under other directors, Shane is unquestionably the finest among them. He possesses a remarkable ability to draw the very best from both our orchestra and choir. He achieves this through clear and purposeful instruction, insightful analogies, expressive communication, and the refined precision of his conducting. While “precision” can sometimes suggest something cold or mechanical, with Shane it is anything but. His conducting is infused with warmth, passion, and an infectious sense of joy that makes performing under his direction a genuinely uplifting experience. I have said that I would sing the dictionary if he were conducting—he is truly that extraordinary.
In all my years of singing in choirs/productions and working with countless directors, I can say without hesitation that Shane is the best of the best. Though he may be running a rehearsal of an entire choir, I feel like I am getting an individual voice lesson through the ways in which he pulls the specific sound he wants from us. He is clearly very experienced and talented, but also collaborates with such humor and warmth. I’ve also taken music theory classes from Shane. His teaching and instruction, his communication of what he needs musically from the musicians under his baton, are all so very clear and easy to follow. Shane is incredibly passionate about what he does and it shows. It is always a privilege anytime I get to work with Shane. I am a better singer because of him.
Shane is such a talented and well rounded musician! I’ve played under his baton as a musician in his orchestra, I’ve taken composition classes from him, and I’ve collaborated with him as a fellow performer. I can truly say he is one of the best people to collaborate with as far as anything music is concerned. He is knowledgeable, experienced, and extremely talented. On top of that, he is a wonderful human being who everyone enjoys being around in general. I would and I do recommend Shane to anyone who is considering music services in any/all the capacities he offers
I've had the privilege of collaborating with Shane Mickelsen for many years in a variety of musical projects from performances to recording projects. He demonstrates exceptional musicianship, professionalism, and has a great ability to communicate artistic ideas. Everything we have worked on together is treated with full dedication and excellence. These qualities make him a pleasure to work with.
I’ve been a pianist in some of the studio sessions that Shane has run, and I’ve always been so impressed with his professionalism and kindness. He is always super prepared, encouraging to the musicians and he always keeps the sessions on track with time. If you’ve considered hiring him for producing, conducting or similar, Shane is your guy!! 👌🏻
