My daughter started her barrel racing career 8 years ago with Tammy at Rafter 77 and next year will be a freshman on a Rodeo Scholarship at Southwest Texas College in Uvalde. Tammy started Brooklyn on a great foundation of both horsemanship but also care and maintenance. If you have are wanted to learn about horsemanship Tammy is definitely the one to go see.

Thanks so much! It's been my pleasure being able to help get Brooklyn a great start. I've loved watching her mature as a rider over the years, and to have been a part of her rodeo life. Wishing her the best as she continues rodeoing in college.
Tammy is an amazing lady and treats my kid like shes her own. Her horses are amazing and never fail. My daughter loves the play days and the horses, she has learned so much from her. 1000/100

Thank you so much! Love having your family ride with us.
I want to start by saying that this barn clearly has a structured program and a strong emphasis on fundamentals, which I respect. However, my personal experience left me feeling discouraged rather than supported.
I rode at this facility once, and my riding was not observed before assumptions were made about my abilities. I come from an English background and am capable of cantering balanced circles and transitioning between gaits using my seat. Unfortunately, the communication I received felt dismissive and based on generalizations rather than an actual evaluation of me as a rider.
My question about learning barrels was asked solely to clarify what I would be learning, as another instructor had explained that lessons do not always include barrel work and may involve other events. I was not asking for shortcuts or expecting to run patterns immediately, but simply wanted to ensure that barrel racing was part of the instruction, as that is my primary goal. This intent appeared to be misunderstood, and the response felt unnecessarily condescending rather than informative.
I fully understand that barrel racing requires far more than simply running a pattern, and I never suggested otherwise. However, the way this was communicated made me feel as though my experience, intentions, and willingness to learn were being discounted.
In addition, for a lesson priced at $120, I was surprised to be required to perform extensive chores beforehand, including scraping mud off multiple horses, catching them, and tacking them up. While I understand the importance of teaching horsemanship—especially for younger riders—this expectation was not clearly communicated in advance and felt inappropriate given the cost of the lesson.
Coaching style and professionalism matter just as much as knowledge. While this program may be a good fit for riders who respond well to very blunt instruction or a working-student-style environment, it was not the right fit for me as an adult rider seeking instruction, encouragement, and value aligned with the price paid.
I encourage prospective students to observe lessons or discuss expectations and teaching style ahead of time to ensure it is the right fit for them.

Hello Nikki I appreciate your review, but would also like to clarify a few things. I do believe there is some misunderstanding about our program. First, the $120 was for two people (you and your BF), for 1.5 hours of lesson time. I gave you a discounted rate, since normally we charge $70 each for new students. Since you and your Boyfriend would be riding together, I only charged you $60 each for your first lesson.
The first lesson is not an evaluation of the rider, as much as it is introduction to our program, and also making sure we have a good foundation. We don't ever want to assume anything, and we want to go over the basics so it is clear when folks join into a group lesson later. Per our original first email it stated "First lessons I do one on one, as a private lesson at the discounted rate of $70. This is so the student will have a basic understanding and be able to join group discussion...Please permit 1.5-2 hours of time for lessons. We ride for 45 min to an hour. We allow 30-45 min to saddle." I appologize if this was misunderstood. But it's really so you get the bare basics so we can dive into more advanced riding. We expect all riders to brush, prepare and saddle their own horses. We do not stall horses individually, they are turned out with their buddies and do get dirty and muddy. We expect all students to brush their own horses and eventually saddle on their own. As with any discipline, it doesn't matter what you've done before, learning a new discipline we want to be sure we have a good foundation. No different than when I reach out to our local working cow horse trainer (not my discipline) to learn how to work cows. Somethings will cross over, but some things, basic things, we need to be sure I understand. Once the basics are known, understood etc, then we build on our foundation.
You contacted me this morning about your lesson yesterday and stated "I just wanted to tell you that your horses and barrels are really fun! Mario and I would love to continue. I really want to learn how to barrel race and I am finally ready to put the English saddle to retirement. Connie said you guys don't always do barrels but that's really what I want to do. Is it on the schedule so I can see when you guys do them? Or are the semi private lessons better?"
MyResponse- " We teach every day how to do barrels. But in order to teach how to run barrels, there are about 70 other drills we do to teach balance and correctness to apply to barrels so you can learn to run correctly on barrels. If all you ever did was run barrels, horses and riders would be blown up and not correct. Its an entire program to get a horse and rider prepared for the barrel pattern." Which you responded to with a thumbs up.
"So all lessons we do in our program prepare you for barrels"
YourResponse - " That's interesting and makes a lot of sense. I just lost my love of riding for years and when I took jumping lessons at home, the whole lesson wasn't jumping but I would still jump in all of them. I'm new to the way wetern riders ride and train and I don't want to lose that spark again. that I finally got back. Thanks for explaining."
MyResponse "I think you would like our entire program. I also highly recommend Breaking the Mold with Paul Humphrey for a better understanding of the horsemanship behind barrel racing. For example, if you can't lope an even perfect circle, why would you think you could run a barrel pattern correctly?"
To cut this short we then talked about you hauling in your OTTB for lessons, which I thought was a great idea, where you could start building your horse on the patterns. I honestly was looking forward to working with you with your own horse. Unfortunately learning to compete at barrels is not about running the pattern daily this will only ruin a horse.
I wish you the best. I hope you give us a second chance. Our facility is not about one lesson, it's about growth with our horses and as riders. This takes time, and a dedicated program.
Great place to learn to ride and enjoy horses. I have been taking lessons here for almost a year now, have worked with Tammy the proprietor and several of her trainers. They have all been kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. The horses are sound, responsive, and well cared for. I am 65, my granddaughter who has also taken lessons and attended summer camp here, have different needs, this is not a once size fits all, the team meets you at your level and helps you grow. I trust and enjoy this team so much that I even ask that the team arrange a horse adventure for my family. From beginner to intermediate, all we're safe, had a horse to meet there need, and had a blast! Thank Rafter77!!!!!

Rafter77 has given my daughters and I the opportunity to fall in love with horses! And 5 years later, we are still here! From learning about safety, the horse brain, body awareness, bonding with your horse, and competing, to bridging the gap in horse ownership, Tammy has been instrumental in our journey! Her coaching and mentorship go well beyond what she is required to do. If you are looking to start your horse journey or want to better your horsemanship and level up your skills, Rafter77 is the place to be!
