We attended the first group class as complete beginners, with one of us already experiencing significant anxiety about learning to dance. Rather than creating an encouraging and supportive environment for beginners, the instructor repeatedly and unnecessarily reprimanded one of us for attempting to help her partner follow the steps. The corrections were delivered in a manner that felt unnecessarily harsh and embarrassing in a group setting. We understand that learning a new skill takes time and that instructors need to provide direction. However, there is a significant difference between constructive instruction and repeatedly scolding a student. When we expressed our discomfort, the situation was not handled with the professionalism or customer care we would expect. We ultimately decided that this was not an environment in which we wanted to continue learning. We were also disappointed that, when we subsequently requested a refund, our concerns were met primarily with a reference to the no-refund policy rather than any acknowledgment of our experience. Beginners should leave a class feeling encouraged to return—not embarrassed for trying.
Unfortunately, Lisa was dancing so quickly that her partner was not even able to attempt to work on his steps. On the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd times I went over there to help them I asked her to "Please slow down so he can walk through his footwork" or "please give him a chance to work on his footwork for a minute before you try to go faster" Each time she disagreed with me by either telling me she was "just trying to help him" or by saying "I'm just here to have fun." She caught onto the footwork quickly and then just had blatant disregard for the fact that her partner needed her to slow down so he could work through his part. I explained his footwork again each time and got him back to doing his part, however as soon as I stepped away again she was doing the same thing. No matter how I tried to explain to her that dragging him around the floor was not helping him, she was just not going to listen. I'm a very patient teacher, I see 250 couples a week who are all there to listen to the instructor and try to apply what they are being taught. Lisa is just not one of those people. The 4th time I came over and asked her again, to "please slow down so he can do his footwork, also" she rudely and loudly replied "I didn't come here to get scolded" At no point did I scold her. Nor did I say anything loudly enough for anyone else in the group to hear; each time I was close enough to have my hand on her shoulder and spoke directly to her. My job is to guide and correct people. If they refuse to be taught, it's out of my hands at that point to help them. Then, she had him call me the next day for a refund. That's all the voicemail said. I politely and professionally responded via email that it takes time and repetition to learn a new skill; which she must have appreciated because she included it in her review - my own words - encouraging them to give it more time. Her response to that was to call me Kerin in the email greeting (instead of my actual name Erin in an attempt to be derogatory to me, apparently?) and repeat over and over how unprofessional I am and how I repeatedly reprimanded her publicly and humiliated her. I'm not sure how that's true when no one else in the class even heard what I was saying to her. And if she doesn't want to be spoken with quietly when other people are in the same (very large) room, then perhaps group classes weren't the right choice for her, personally.
I just did our Father/Daughter wedding dance and thanks to Erin it went perfect. Her process made it simple and fun to learn, I was so prepared I didn't even worry about my next move and more importantly I could enjoy the dance with my daughter and now I'm starting again with her for my next daughter's wedding.
Thank you David! It was a blast working with you and Lizzie, and I look forward to more fun in the upcoming weeks and months!
My dad and I wanted to do a choreographed dance to a song from my childhood and Erin planned a perfect dance for us! The 10 lessons were definitely worth it and she made sure we were prepared for our special day.
Aww thank you! It was so fun working with you and your dad! 🤩🥰
Erin, the owner and lead instructor, gives patient and practical instruction. The focus is on dancing for real life situations like weddings and social occasions, not competitive dancing. The group classes are fun and low pressure. We supplement the group lessons with private lessons and specialty-focused lessons to round things out.
Thank you Judy! It's been my pleasure to teach you and Scott for the last 2 years! 😊😊
Love our dance lessons here. Erin is an awesome teacher.
Thanks Dave! Glad you're having fun, that's what it's all about 🤩
We got the wedding package and learned a choreographed first dance. Erin was amazing! I had no dance experience and she made me look great! Our guests were amazed! She was able to break things down, was very encouraging and gave so many great tips and advice. Highly recommend!
Aww, thanks Dan! I LOVED working with you and Allyson! ❤️ I hope married life is going well for you both 😊😊
LOTS of fun.
Thanks Mark! Love teaching you and Trish every week! ❤️
We started dance lessons with Erin for our first dance at our wedding. I had never danced a day in my life and I TRULY did not think I would gain the confidence and excitement I did with this process. She was so helpful and so thoughtful. Our day would not have been so perfect without her. :) Added THE picture we would not have had without her.
Aww, that photo is LEGIT! <3 And it was absolutely my pleasure to help you and Serhiy prepare for that special time together on the dance floor. You really blossomed into quite the beautiful and accomplished dancer over these past 7 months and it was fun to watch :) I hope you two keep making time to dance with each other for the rest of your lives!
My wife and I have been taking lessons, (group and private) for a little over 2 years. We can't recommend Erin highly enough! We have a great time during lessons, and enjoy dancing 💃 when we go out. We learned to waltz for a Dress Ball we attend annually and really love it. You won't go wrong with Erin and Social Style!
Thanks Scott! Love having you and Michelle in the studio 💗 almost as often as I'm there! 😉
