Would not recommend. I was seen there for pain in my shoulder, and was told it was probably related to my neck and had to come back to see a different Dr there, than the PA who was assigned to me. I left and was given an appointment to get an MRI. I had an MRI completed, and after a month of not hearing back from them, called and asked what I was supposed to do. They told me I had to come back in to see the same PA I saw last time. I said he told me he couldn't help me and I had to see a different person there related to my neck. They said since he ordered the MRI I had to come back and see him. I arrived and the same PA came in and told me my shoulder pain was probably related to my neck, and he wasn't going to address it until I had my neck looked at. I explained what had happened and that they told me there that I had to talk to him first. He left, and Nurse came back and told me I had to sign a piece of paper that said I was responsible to cover the medical bills for all of my visit visits there (which included an MRI and x-ray), Because my Insurance referral stated my pain was in my shoulder. I told them it was in my shoulder, but the physicians assistant said I had to get my neck looked at by a spine doctor before we would address any shoulder pain if it ended up not being related to my neck. I said I was not going to sign a piece of paper saying I was responsible for the bill and not my insurance, because I was referred there through my insurance, and went there for that specific problem. The nurse again insisted that I sign a piece of paper saying I was responsible for the bill. I again refused to sign the paper and told her I need to call my insurance, because they referred me there, and I wasn't going to sign a piece of paper stating that I was responsible for the bill and not them. She again insisted I signed the paper and told me I could stay in the room to call them. I called my insurance company, after 20 minutes of sitting there and finally getting through to them, they told me flat out, 'do not sign the piece of paper' and to leave. I left the room, could not find any staff anywhere in the back (It was around noon time, so maybe everyone was at lunch), But after a few minutes of looking around and not finding anyone. I just left. When being referred to a facility, for a medical problem, and your insurance company sent you there to be seen, this facility should not try to force a patient to sign a piece of paper saying that they will cover the bill because the insurance sent them for one problem and they 'think' its related to a different body part, and they had you come back again to be seen by the same provider who already told you they will not help you. The entire situation provided me with no help, no one provided any treatment, it wasted several months (between waiting to be seen both times), and over 8 hours of driving the 4 hours round trip there twice. To add to this story several weeks later. I went to see a neurosurgeon, at Sentara Neurosurgery Specialist (providing excellent care- if you ever need to go there). The neurosurgeon looked at my imaging, and I have also been to a physical therapist. My shoulder pain is NOT related to anything in my neck (which looked fine). I have tried calling SMOCC (you can never get a receptionist and must leave a message on the automated system for a call back). Weeks have passed with no call back so that I can see them - still waiting to get my shoulder pain looked at which (now in October) has been going on for a year. My primary care physician had to put in a request for me to see an orthopedist at a different facility.

Staff is friendly and accommodating. Examinations and procedures are scheduled quickly with little waiting. Dr. Muffley was professional, competent and engaging. His diagnosis and action plan were throughly explained leaving me with a clear understanding of how we would proceed.

Very positive experience here. Came here for a second opinion and was blown away the moment I got through the door! The building looks very new and well maintained, the front desk people are friendly and Dr.Askel has been absolutely amazing to me with great bedside manner! He is friendly, thorough, very accommodating and he answered all of my questions & concerns without missing a beat! He explained everything to me and made sure I understood everything from point A to point B. But most importantly, I am confident that my knee will be better in no time thanks to Dr. Askel! Im very very grateful to have found SMOC! Thank you
