Sylvan Learning Carmel Indiana refund experience: Families with children who learn differently or require highly individualized instruction should carefully evaluate whether Sylvan Learning in Carmel is the right fit, as the program appears better suited for students who need reinforcement of standard classroom instruction rather than more specialized educational support. My family began working with Sylvan Learning in Carmel in 2017 and had a positive experience while the program met our child’s educational needs. The staff at the center were kind and supportive, and we appreciated the help our child received. As the needs evolved, our child required more specialized academic support. In May 2025, I spoke with the Carmel center regarding this need for specialized academic support. During that conversation, I was informed that the center was unable to provide the level of educational support our child required.<br>Based on that discussion, I formally requested a refund and was referred to the directors, Gina and Lakin. After being unable to reach them by phone, we communicated by email. I was informed that, under Sylvan's policies, a refund for our unused instructional hours would not be provided. Instead, we were offered the option to transfer our remaining hours to another family. While I understand that businesses have policies, this situation was different because the center had clearly acknowledged after an in-depth discussion that it could no longer meet our child’s educational needs. I had hoped for a more flexible and customer-focused resolution given those circumstances. Since then, we have made multiple documented attempts to contact both the franchise owner, Kent Kolbow, and Sylvan's corporate office regarding this matter. Despite repeated emails and corporate involvement, we have not received any response from the franchise owner. For parents considering Sylvan, I strongly encourage asking detailed questions about how progress is measured, how often updates are provided, and what benchmarks are used to determine whether the program is effective. It is also important to clearly understand what services the center can and cannot provide before making a long-term financial commitment. Monitor your child's progress regularly and reassess whether the program continues to meet their needs. We also found that communication and continuity of oversight varied over time, and at times it was difficult to feel there was a consistent understanding of our child's progress from one point of contact to another. Our concern is not with the instruction our child received while Sylvan was an appropriate fit, but with the lack of follow-through and communication after the center acknowledged it could not meet the educational needs and we attempted to resolve the remaining financial matter in good faith. We would still welcome the opportunity to resolve this matter directly and would gladly update this review if someone reaches out.
