ONE STAR – Absolutely Unacceptable Experience with UT Hospice On Monday, October 12, 2026, my family made the heartbreaking decision to bring our father home under hospice care. He was in respiratory failure, and all we wanted was for him to spend his remaining time at home, comfortable and surrounded by family. Instead, UT Hospice turned an already devastating situation into an absolute nightmare. We met with a hospice case manager at the hospital who specifically asked whether Dad had oxygen at home. I explained that he did not, and she documented it. That afternoon, Missy informed me that Home Healthcare would deliver his hospital bed and equipment. Mike, the equipment provider, arrived, set up the bed, and left. At 4:30 p.m., the ambulance arrived to bring Dad home. My brother asked whether the oxygen equipment had been delivered. It hadn’t! I immediately called Missy, who told me she hadn’t been informed to order oxygen. How does a hospice provider arrange to send a patient in respiratory failure home WITHOUT ensuring his oxygen equipment is there? After nearly two hours, the oxygen machine finally arrived. Missy instructed me to call hospice’s on-call number when Dad was on his way. I did exactly that, only to spend 25 minutes listening to piano music before I could leave a voicemail. Five minutes later, Dad arrived. The ambulance personnel brought my father inside and placed him in bed. When they attempted to connect his oxygen, they discovered THE WRONG MACHINE HAD BEEN DELIVERED! It was a 5-liter machine. My father required 15 liters of oxygen to breathe comfortably, meaning he needed two 10-liter concentrators. I immediately called Mike, who became defensive and started blaming hospice. Kali from UT Hospice finally returned my call. When I explained the situation, she told me to call her back after speaking with Mike. In my opinion, her response demonstrated a serious lack of urgency and preparedness. Mike then asked how long the ambulance personnel could stay. They explained they only had three oxygen cylinders, had already switched to the second, and couldn’t remain because Dad would run out of oxygen. Mike said it would take another hour and a half to deliver the correct equipment. THE AMBULANCE PERSONNEL HAD TO LOAD MY CRITICALLY ILL FATHER BACK UP AND RETURN HIM TO THE HOSPITAL! My dad was unnecessarily transported home, moved into his bed, then placed back onto a stretcher and transported to the hospital because the people responsible for coordinating his care failed to provide the proper equipment. During the return trip, I found myself acting as a mediator between UT Hospice and the equipment provider. Instead of spending precious time comforting my father, I was trying to resolve problems that should NEVER have been my responsibility. Kali provided little meaningful assistance, while Mike continued with his defensive attitude and excuses. I did eventually speak with Karen, an administrator at UT Hospice. She was professional, listened to my concerns, and apologized. I appreciated that, but an apology cannot undo what my father endured. We ultimately lost all confidence in UT Hospice and chose another provider. My father spent his life working hard, providing for his family, and never asking for much. In his final days, all he wanted was to go home and be comfortable. HE DESERVED BETTER! Hospice care is supposed to provide dignity, compassion, and peace, not confusion, excuses, and unnecessary suffering. What happened was a complete breakdown in communication, coordination, and accountability. Families only get one chance to spend these final moments with someone they love. Those moments are priceless, and they cannot be given back. I sincerely hope UT Hospice takes a serious look at what happened and makes changes before another family experiences this. If you’re considering UT Hospice for someone you love, please do your research and ask questions. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend them.

Would leave 0 stars if possible. Several very unprofessional nurses who stormed out of my house and left my family member without care because we denied several doses of morphine when said family member was not in pain. Nurse Heather came to my house and told me family member was in pain and she was going to administer morphine. I asked family member myself and they told me they were not in pain so I told nurse Heather, I would not administer morphine and she stormed out of my house without discussion or debrief couldn't tell me a estimate on how long my family member had to live or anything. Less than 6 hours later my family member was pronounced dead. Took her a hour for her to text me back about calling in medication for family member that was dying. I've had 2 family members on hospice through UT Hospice and in both of my experiences morphine was heavily pushed by nurses and staff to the point where my family members were comatose for days, just a few days before they passed away. My final moments with them were spent while they were in a opioid induced daze.
