Peaceful to walk right next to the river. Today was windy but we did enjoy it watching the Blue Angels.

One of my favorite spots to go for a walk and decompress. Usually find people fishing or with cast nets. Limited parking so you may have to park in the side lot and then walk over.

  • Trailhead access: Very easy
  • Comfort level: Very safe
  • Parking options: Free parking lot

This is a fascinating, but not well-known historic site in the Mandarin neighborhood of Jacksonville. There is a scenic walking trail under large live oak trees, with several restored historic buildings along the way, all leading to a beautiful view of the St. Johns River. The Mandarin Museum and the St. Joseph’s Mission Schoolhouse, which served African American children, are especially interesting. The museum has very knowledgeable and helpful staff, and the displays are very imformative. There is a timeline showing important milestones in the area’s history and the different nations that once controlled this part of Florida. Other displays cover the area’s original Native American inhabitants, the area's colonial history, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s life and contributions to Mandarin when she lived here, and the development of Mandarin village during the 19th and 20th centuries. Most fascinating to me was the room devoted to the sinking of the Union steamship, the Maple Leaf, in 1864. There were large displays with images, testimony and letters of people who were on the ship when it sunk when it hit a Confederate mine. The rediscovery of the shipwreck in 1984 led to excavation and retrieval of parts of the ship and many interesting artefacts.

Very cute park with nice walking trails, a pier with great view of St Johns and down town. Most of the times I feel safe there but I have ran into some unsavory characters there on different occasions.

After walking the park and getting a great tour of several buildings, we grew to love searching for the various frogs around the trails and views. As we were leaving, we were able to attend an event where we got to paint our own frogs! Wonderful event, history, and memories.
