Thank you so much for this great review, Toni. We really appreciate you being an awesome client and helping to share the word about us. We’re here for you and your furry family members anytime. Thanks again!
I have 3 dogs and 1 cat. EVERYONE here is amazing with animals and you can tell they love what they do. I have a very anxious dog and they were able to help him through getting his vaccines. I was very nervous about taking him in because I didn't want what you normally get when you have an anxious dog. They sat with him until he was ready. Gave him lots of treats just talked to him. He doesn't even let a lot of people pet him even if he likes them and both of them were petting him. Even in the lobby they directed me to the other side of the office where there would be a little less foot traffic and you could tell my boy was comfortable with them for how he is. Not excited by any means but more comfortable. You want good care for your pet and isn't 1 billion $ this is the place to go. They have seen 2 of my dogs and my cat and I have had an amazing experience everytime

Thank you so much, Margret Marie, for your wonderful 5-star rating! We're absolutely thrilled to hear that you had such a joyful experience with us.
I was extremely disappointed with my experience at West Lake Veterinary Clinic on July 15, 2026, especially after having much better experiences there in the past when Dr. Benson was practicing.
My dog, Maya, has EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency), a condition that requires careful management of her diet and digestion. She also has an extreme fear of nail trims, so I brought her in to have her nails trimmed under anesthesia.
Before the procedure, they wanted her to take gabapentin and trazodone. Afterward, they wanted to send her home with antibiotics and pain medication. I declined these additional medications because I didn't believe they were all necessary, I already had medications at home if needed, and I work with a homeopathic veterinarian.
When they called to tell me Maya was ready to be picked up, they informed me they would be sending her home with antibiotics. I explained that I didn't want them, that I already had antibiotics available if they were ever needed, and that I also had Rimadyl for pain if necessary.
When I picked her up, a technician told me that if I wanted to bring Maya back in the future, I would be required to follow their medication protocols. I found that response unnecessarily rigid and dismissive of my concerns and choices as her owner.
Between the required bloodwork, anesthesia, and nail trim, I paid approximately $400. Maya then had a very difficult recovery, including prolonged restlessness, drooling, and refusing to eat or drink for much of the day. Because of her EPI and her need for frequent meals with digestive enzymes, this was especially concerning.
Just three months later, her nails were excessively long again, and she was struggling with her daily walks. This time, I decided to return to Mid Valley Veterinary Hospital, where I'd had positive experiences years ago.
What a difference!
After listening to Maya's history and my concerns, the veterinarian suggested trying to trim her nails with a muzzle and additional staff assistance before resorting to anesthesia. And they succeeded! Although they couldn't get every nail as short as we'd like, they were able to trim them without putting her under.
We now have a plan to try trazodone before future appointments to help Maya tolerate nail trims without general anesthesia.
I personally prefer a homeopathic approach to health care, both for myself and my dog, because I believe in minimizing the use of medications whenever possible. That doesn't mean I'm unwilling to use conventional medicine when it's necessary. In fact, I would much rather give Maya trazodone before a nail trim than put her through another round of general anesthesia, followed by hours of feeling sick and being unable to eat, especially with her EPI.
I understand that veterinarians have their own medical protocols and responsibilities. However, I also believe pet owners deserve to have their concerns respected and their treatment preferences taken seriously.
There are different approaches to caring for our animals, and I believe there should be room for respectful discussion rather than an ultimatum.
I'm grateful to have found a veterinarian willing to listen, think outside the box, and work with me to find a better solution for Maya.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We understand that nail trims can be very stressful for some dogs, and we appreciate the importance of finding an approach that works for both the pet and the owner.
Maya was brought to us for a sedated cautery nail trim, which is different from a routine nail trim. Because this procedure involves intentionally trimming the nails to the point of bleeding and using cautery to stop the bleeding, we recommended bloodwork before anesthesia for Maya’s safety, as well as antibiotics and pain medication to help manage the increased risk of infection and discomfort associated with the procedure.
Our recommendations were made with Maya’s well-being in mind. We respect that owners may have different preferences regarding medications; however, we also have a responsibility to recommend the care we believe is appropriate for each patient. Our discussion about future visits was based on our concerns about proceeding with this particular procedure without the recommended medications.
We’re glad Maya has found an approach that has worked for her at another clinic, and we sincerely hope she continues to do well. Our goal has always been to provide safe, appropriate care for our patients while maintaining open and respectful communication with their owners.
West Lake Animal Hospital has assisted me greatly with veterinary advice for my dog(s) occasional medical issues. Thank you all at WLAH for being there for your community's dogs.
I appreciate you,
Aaron B.

Thank you, Aaron, for your kind words about West Lake Animal Hospital. We're glad to be a part of your pet's care and appreciate your trust in our team. Your support means a lot to us!
I loved this vet at first but now, honestly go anywhere else. We brought our cat here to figure out what was going on after he dramatically lost weight. (he's elderly) and at first we were really pleased with the treatment. he was diagnosed with diabetes and we were managing it pretty well with check ins.
fast forward about a year and a half.
his diabetes isn't really manageable any more and we keep bringing him in to try to figure out why. we do glucose curves, fructosemine tests.. all of it. and the doc literally came out to us and went "ya i don't know what's going on. try to give him .25 of a unit." and seemed annoyed we were asking. most of the time it was the desk staff calling us much later with information.
um...what kind of answer is that?
we continue to monitor our cat as best we can on our own. We continue to note the really weird behaviors and remissions he's going into that Benson ignores and says is nothing.
He ends up needing his teeth removed (like i said...he's an old boy). the doc does blood work to make sure he'd be ok for the surgery. He tells me everything is fine, but there's one elevated kidney metric but "it's not one we really look at so it's fine to ignore".
after surgery it's the relief vet that calls me (she ended up doing the sugery) and she goes "did he go over the blood work with you?" and ends up telling me that kidney level "we don't look at" ya... turns out that and the urine levels (that benson also ran and had available to him) showed that our cat was in early kidney disease and was at a high risk of developing kidney failure if he underwent surgery. so the relief vet (who was great and works at vetmed) kept our boy even longer to over hydrate him and try her best to prevent kidney failure.
He also tells me he thinks he heard a heart murmur but "it's so loud and he's stress who can really say that for sure"
How do you completely miss that? AND tell me oh we don't look at those levels?!
fast forward even more and we're now at a new vet. Turns out HE DID have a heart murmur and has heart disease. So thanks for ignoring that too.
oh and the diabetes? and all the weird secondary symptoms we kept bringing up to the doc and asking him to look into? ya...it's not diabetes. its a different disease that often is misdiagnosed as diabetes. The new vet said all the signs were there to suggest it wasn't diabetes.
so honestly, he needs to retire. he's missing really big and obvious things. take your pets literally anywhere else.

Okay, so FYI, This place is only open 4 days a week. I didn't realize that when I chose it, but they have reasonable prices and Dr Benson is really nice.

I understand that you were looking for a response sooner, but it is not fair to characterize the delay as negligence or as our choosing to ignore you when your messages were sent outside of our normal business hours.
I recently changed needed to change vets. I was recommended West Lake Hospital. I was not disappointed. They got my dog right in and it was a great experience. Everyone was friendly and helpful.
