Willan Academy of Music

The 10th year anniversary of the Willan Music Academy was even more glorious than I had anticipated. Having been informed that it would happen on May 9th by the accomplished violinist Yuko Murase, though I was not familiar with the school, I was sure that the participation of Gregory Singer's Manhattan Symphonie would in itself be an absolute delight. And, of course Gregory and his fellow musicians, Yuko, Brian, Lenny and Yelena were their fabulous selves. And the perpetually personable Gregory was his, as ever, entertaining showman self. What a joyous celebration of the Willan Academy, started by Kenji Haba just 10 years ago, Nothing could have showcased the enormous accomplishment of those 10 years than the performance at Merkin Hall. The venue itself was so comfortable that the few hours spent listening to the youngens show their blossoming talents, and how they performed some of Gregory's wonderful compositions, with the maestro himself at the helm. A few hours flew by. We were all craving more. Kenji has under his belt the amazing nurturing of an assembly of exemplary faculty, students and alumni, whose talents were presented for the audience to revel in. Former students now an award-winning accapello group, a faculty composed of talents too numerous to mention, such as a jazz ensemble group, who treated us to an assortment of tunes from greats such as Duke Ellington! What an afternoon! Hope we don't have to wait another 10 years for the next concert. Thank you Kenji and all the incredibly talented performers who were each and every one a credit to the Willan Academy.

Our son has been taking lessons with Kenji for a little over a year now, and we can't speak more highly of him or the program he and his team have built. He does an incredible job breaking lessons down into manageable pieces for our young son while keeping them engaging and fun. Beyond being an amazing teacher, Kenji is exceptionally patient and kind. If you're considering introducing your child to music, Willan should be your first choice.

I could never have imagined that after founding the Manhattan Symphonie over 20 years ago, conducting numerous concerts at Carnegie Hall, and enjoying numerous tours as far away as China, that a recent concert at Merkin Hall in early May, 2026, would become my most meaningful and cherished moments on stage with members of my beloved Manhattan Symphonie. The special occasion concert was the 10th year celebration of the Willan Academy of Music, founded by Kenji Haba. We shared the performance with students from the Academy, as well as amateurs and adult professional veteran members of the Manhattan Symphonie. Though at different ages, and stages in life and musical abilities, we unified as one entity spreading the love of making joyous music together. Speaking of ‘music’ , the music was composed by me! We performed selections, as a world premier, from my 16 suites newly released for the public. Everyone felt the excitement in the experience, including parents, children, amateurs, professionals and Kenji Haba who was radiant, and seemed thrilled and deservedly proud of his accomplishment. I was honored to have been chosen to bring some of the lucky members from the Manhattan Symphonie. What a terrific and joyous concert! The students were outstanding and so professional in their presentation, with wonderful musical ideas. It was humbling to be in the presence of so much talent! Bravo to Willan Academy for helping these students on their journey and sharing their music with us.

I was part of the concert that took place at Merkin Concert Hall last week, and it was amazing! The Willan Academy has a wonderful mission to help spread the joy of music amongst young people and diverse audiences, and I hope more people can help support the academy!

It’s a great experience, kids have chance to work with other musicians, coordinates with others and it’s a great concert, everyone enjoyed it!

This school has a wonderful sense of community. The founder is an amazing human being — thoughtfully organized yet flexible, always welcoming everyone with a big smile. Communication is excellent, and he treats kids, parents, and teachers with genuine kindness and respect. From the moment you enter his orbit, you feel included like family. A fun-loving, friendly person who has created a truly special environment.

Kenji Haba and the Willan Academy of Music play a very important and special role in my son’s life. My son is 12 and has been taking home lessons by an amazing piano and singing instructor for the past few years. His instructor has been so supportive of my child and really helped him grow musically. The Academy provides recitals twice a year for all age students to practice their pieces and shine in a safe and supported environment. They also have provided other opportunities for my son to perform, such as the amazing 10 year anniversary celebration concert! We have made friends through the school from all over the city and around the world! It is truly a lovely community to belong to!

Willan Academy is an exceedingly warm and nurturing school for students of all ages and learning stages. Kenji Haba, the founder of the school, goes above and beyond to foster an environment where students may always feel encouraged, and create opportunities and platforms for them to perform on a consistent basis. Combined with a wonderful faculty of skilled and talented performing artists who mentor all students and motivate them, I believe anybody who signs up for lessons with Willan Academy will no doubt find that they may receive the most amazing experience that will last for a lifetime.

My daughter has been a student of Willan academy for over two years and we could not be happier. The in-home lessons are great and flexible and her cello teacher has been very supportive, encouraging and supportive. Our daughter has developed a deep love for music!
