Reynolda House Museum of American Art
Reynolda House Museum of American Art at a glance
Visitors praise the historic mansion, extensive art collections, and well-maintained gardens, noting that staff are generally helpful and the basement offers unique recreational features. However, recurring complaints highlight security guards perceived as overly intrusive, particularly with families, and frustration regarding admission fees when the main house is closed for renovations. Some reviewers also criticize the locking of public restrooms during private events and inconsistent communication about availability.

Lovely property with great art throughout the house and a separate exhibition space. A lovely place to spend an afternoon. Wonderful staff who seem to really love the house and it's contents.
This was a lovely afternoon excursion. The grounds, house and village. We went on a Sunday and only the restaurants and eateries were open . The house is a self guided tour, with a photo exhibition downstairs. Exhibitions change throughout the year. There is a fee to get in. There are stairs to the second floor…
This was unquestionably the most impressive and rewarding mansion tour we have been to. You are allowed to walk through from cellar to attic!! The cellar has many activity sites Bowling, target range, heated swimming pool in the idea of being on a ship, etc. Just so worth the tour! I will never forget it.
I love visiting grand homes like this. Super cool experience and not to be missed if you’re in the area.
Always a great place to bring family and friends visiting from out of town. The mansion is beautiful 👍.

This was a lovely afternoon excursion. The grounds, house and village. We went on a Sunday and only the restaurants and eateries were open . The house is a self guided tour, with a photo exhibition downstairs. Exhibitions change throughout the year. There is a fee to get in. There are stairs to the second floor and an elevator if needed. Then a short walk to the greenhouses and gardens and the village a little further along. We ate at the Tavern had some very tasty appetizers. All the food looked good that was being served. We had a beautiful afternoon there.

The Reynolda House is one of those places where the building itself competes with the artwork, and honestly, both win. Walking through the estate gives you a vivid sense of how the Reynolds family lived, entertained, and in one unfortunate case, met their end, all wrapped in the quiet elegance of a 1917 mansion. The galleries are filled with standout pieces like Peale's 1795 portrait of the Robinsons, Thomas Cole's woodland scene, and Albert Bierstadt's Sierra Nevada landscape, each out perfectly framed by the calm, refined setting. Did I mention the Georgia O'Keeffe landscape? There's one of these here too. Beyond the paintings, the museum offers a thoughtful look at period clothing, children's toys, and even the inner workings of the estate's organ, which is a rare treat to see up close. The whole experience is stepping into a carefully preserved world where art, architecture, and history all share the same space. It's all wonderful until a few loud visitors decide the museum is the right place for a group chat and a few "Wow, check this out!" comments that the ushers seem committed to letting breathe. It's a remarkable visit, as long as you're lucky to enjoy it at a reasonable decibel level. There are also the outside grounds, which are free to wander. A ticket is only needed for the home itself.

The staff at the front desk is extremely pleasant. Unfortunately that's where the professionalism of the staff ends. Having visited Biltmore, the MET in NYC, and also had the privilege of visiting the Louvre & D'Orsay museums in Paris.... I can say I have never seen more unhinged security guards than I have at Reynolda House! At one point we just had to laugh because you really can't make this stuff up. The security guard was an older woman in her '60s, she had a blonde bob. She started following my mother and I (two grown women who quite frankly were dressed appropriately, behaved appropriately, and didn't speak in a loud manner etc). I honestly feel uncomfortable defending myself. But it needs to be said, because it expresses just how unwarranted the stalking was. We somehow got on her radar as soon as we walked into the current civil rights exhibit featuring photography by the amazing Danny Lyon. She approached us and said something about my bag. I just nodded my head politely. My mother reached out to casually point at one of the information boards in the gallery, kind of making a point while we were chatting, and the guard came up again and said " They don't like you getting close to the photographs". Which was odd to me, because we weren't standing in front of a photograph, but a large information board. We also didn't get close to it, didn't cross the line, and certainly didn't touch it. It was at that point that it hit me... This woman is doing more than just her job. Something odd is going on here. Sure enough, she ended up following us around the gallery. Which is hilarious cause if you've ever been there...it's so SMALL, literally just one room! This might be inappropriate, but I have a weird sense of humor. We are white, and we were looking at photos of the civil rights movement in the '60s. I told my mom "Hmm, maybe this is an immersive part of the experience, so we can see what it felt like as a black person" (to be followed around as if you are a criminal when you're just trying to enjoy your day) 😂 In the center of the gallery they have a large screen setup so you can watch interviews with founders of the SNCC. I sat on a bench with my mother to view it. A few moments in, I had a weird tingle, like someone was watching me. Enough to distract me. So I look over and sure enough that lady is standing there staring at us 😂. You can't make this up folks! Thankfully, I'm pretty laid back, and nothing really bothers me too much. So I just kept finding the humor in it. At one point I slid down to the far end of the bench... Because she was staring at me for over 15 minutes and it was hard to focus on the film. I moved just to test her. Sure enough, as soon as I was out of her view, the security guard moved over about 8 ft just so she could watch me again. It's funny because it was crazy in person, but it sounds even crazier as I'm typing it out 🤷♀️ After we were done at the gallery I assumed the stalking by the security guard would end. I just need to make a note that none of the other security guards we saw, seemed to be exhibiting the same behavior. But no! I know you're not going to believe me but the same woman "security guard " (I'm just going to start putting that in quotes because I do not believe she is someone who was officially trained to be a true security guard, the behavior was more akin to sketch comedy) FOLLOWED US! I kid you not. She left the gallery and fol-low-ed-us through Reynolda House! It became like a game, testing her just to see when she would pop up around the corner. She never let us down 😂. I came home and out of curiosity looked up the reviews. I was shocked to see similar reviews as far out as FIVE YEARS ago! That's when I realized there's something extremely bizarre going on with the staff at this place. This behavior seems to not only be condoned, but possibly encouraged? Please take this into account when deciding whether to visit Reynolda House. I honestly don't know what else to say 😔 I'd recommend showing up with your sense of humor intact 😉
