I came in for a 60 minute deep tissue massage. I’m generally pretty tense and work at a computer so my neck, shoulders and upper back get very tight and knotted. The massage and experience started out OK, But then got weirder. Due to my tension in my back, she recommended cupping (which she would throw in for free) and suggested extending my massage to 90 minutes, which I was happy to pay for. She kept reinforcing that the cupping would be complementary and requested a good review on Google (not necessarily what I want to talk about mid-massage, but was happy to oblige if the service was good). After applying the cupping and starting to work on other parts of my body while the cups were on my back, another customer arrived. She went out to greet him and told him to go in the other room (she also left the room several other times to fix the music which kept switching to very loud radio ads). At this point I was about 35-40 minutes into my appointment. She then came in and informed me that my massage now needed to be 60 minutes since she had another customer. The rest of the massage felt extremely rushed after that. She did not focus on any of my real tension points or knots and I felt like she was just trying to get me out as quick as possible. Had I know the massage was only going to be 60 minutes I would’ve declined the cupping and opted for an actual deep tissue massage with focus on my tension points rather than a quick breeze over. At the end, I came out to pay and there was a sign that encouraged 30% tipping due to the strenuous work of the massage therapists. Given my experience, I was not willing to do 30% and asked to do 20%. It was $80 And she rounded to $100 And once again pointed at the sign, encouraging me to do a Google review. At this point I did not argue that that was not 20% and just wanted to get out of there. About an hour and a half after getting home, I got a text message telling me not to shower that night because of the cupping. That would’ve been a good post care conversation at the end of the massage as I was jumping into the shower as I received the text message. Now I have massive cupping circle bruises all over my back and neck and my shoulders and neck are still tense, despite her telling me they felt softer. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt at some point and try again, but I’m just not sure.
