After multiple disappointing experiences with ServiceOne, I have completely lost confidence in this company and requested cancellation of my home warranty coverage.
My concerns involve a pattern of expensive repair recommendations, questionable assessments, and what I consider high-pressure sales tactics.
1. Plumbing – $2,400 in Recommended Repairs
We contacted ServiceOne about a leak near our toilet. Their technician recommended approximately $2,400 in plumbing repairs, which we were told would not be covered under our warranty. We received no satisfactory explanation for the denial.
Fortunately, we sought a second opinion. Another plumber identified the problem as a faulty toilet wax seal, replaced it, and resolved the leak. We have experienced no further leaking.
Why was $2,400 in plumbing work recommended when a simple wax seal replacement ultimately solved the problem?
2. Furnace – $7,000 to $18,000 Replacement
ServiceOne advised us that our furnace needed replacement, quoting approximately $7,000 to $18,000. We also experienced what felt like considerable pressure to authorize this expensive work.
We subsequently consulted TWO independent HVAC professionals. Neither found a problem requiring furnace replacement.
Had we accepted ServiceOne's recommendation without questioning it, we potentially could have spent thousands of dollars replacing a furnace that two other professionals believed did not need replacing.
While professionals can disagree, this discrepancy is extremely concerning.
3. Air Conditioning – $1,500 Duct Cleaning Recommendation
During an earlier air conditioning service visit, ServiceOne also attempted to sell us approximately $1,500 in duct cleaning services.
By itself, this might not have been especially troubling. Combined with our plumbing and furnace experiences, however, it contributed to my concern that service visits were becoming opportunities to recommend expensive additional work.
The Bottom Line
We paid approximately $58 per month for home warranty coverage, plus service deductibles, expecting dependable service and peace of mind.
Instead, we repeatedly found ourselves questioning expensive recommendations and seeking independent opinions.
I cannot speak to ServiceOne's intentions, but I can speak to our experiences. The discrepancies between their recommendations and those of other professionals have completely destroyed my confidence in this company.
I've requested cancellation and have no intention of using their services again.
My advice to other homeowners: If ServiceOne recommends an expensive repair or replacement, PLEASE get an independent second opinion before agreeing to the work. It could save you thousands of dollars.
