I brought Kari a few inspiration photos, and she asked thoughtful questions before getting started. The first color came out darker than I'd pictured. Looking back, some of my photos did read that way. Kari could tell I was surprised and told me to call her if I wasn't happy. I decided I'm just not meant to be a brunette, so I texted her the next day. Kari was genuinely glad I reached out and had me come back in to fix it. She talked me through what I'd asked for based on my photos versus what I was actually picturing for myself. The fix took a couple of hours, and Kari never once made me feel rushed or like a hassle. Now I'm blonde again with a little warmer undertone, exactly what I envisioned. Kari was lovely, gracious, and professional the whole time, and her staff was amazing. I couldn't recommend Kari and the team at Shades more!

I really wanted to love my experience here, but unfortunately I walked out in tears. I came in for a cut and tone after a previous brassy color mistake. The color treatment and toning were a breeze, and I genuinely love my color. It’s beautiful and very well done, so I do want to give credit where it’s due. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the haircut. I came in specifically looking for longer, face-framing bottleneck bangs, with the middle pieces slightly shorter to create the illusion of bangs without actually having bangs. I brought inspiration pictures and explained that I wanted something very low-maintenance that would still blend seamlessly into the length of my hair. What I left with was incredibly short bangs that do not fully blend into the rest of my hair and instead sit directly in my eyes throughout the day. This is the exact opposite of the low-maintenance style I came in asking for. I am incredibly disappointed because I was clear about what I wanted and brought multiple inspiration pictures to help communicate it. If there was any uncertainty about what I was asking for, I would have much rather been asked a million questions and shown where the hair would be cut/the angle of the ‘blending’ before the scissors ever touched it. I would have happily clarified what I meant rather than having an assumption made that resulted in a haircut I now hate. I understand that hair grows and that mistakes can happen, but this was especially upsetting because the style I requested was specifically chosen to avoid having to style bangs every day. Instead, I’m now left with a haircut that will require significantly more daily maintenance than I had before. Again, I absolutely love the color and think that part of my appointment was beautifully done. Unfortunately, the haircut has completely overshadowed that experience for me, and I left feeling genuinely devastated rather than happy with my new hair.

I go in regularly for a men's cut and Kari does a great job. She listens to what I want, takes her time, and is a great conversationalist. Nice, relaxed vibe at Shades as well!

I had a wonderful experience at this salon! Yessy was so kind and did an amazing job on my hair. She was very detailed with my haircut and made sure everything looked perfect. I love how my hair turned out and would definitely recommend her to others!

I usually don’t leave bad reviews, but this experience with Kari was genuinely so disappointing that I feel like I need to share it. I paid $475 after specifically asking for a blended balayage with highlights and showing clear inspiration photos. The first result was basically one overall bright copper/ginger color with a harsh horizontal line across the back of my head. I’m attaching photos because the result speaks for itself. I went back for a color correction, and although the copper was toned down, the uneven banding and transition were still visible. My hair ended up dark at the top, noticeably lighter through the middle, and dark again at the bottom, which is nothing like the blended, dimensional balayage with highlights I originally asked for. During the correction, I brought up the highlights again because they were part of my original request. She told me that lightening my hair again would cost more money. I don’t understand why I should have to pay additional money for something that was part of the original plan and should have been done the first time. She also brought up how she had already used products and that products cost money, as if that isn’t part of running a business and providing the $475 service I already paid for. What made the experience significantly worse was her attitude and complete lack of accountability. She repeatedly blamed my naturally dark hair and became defensive when I pointed out the issues. My dark hair does not explain a harsh horizontal line or poor blending, and my hair clearly was capable of lifting considering how bright copper it became after the first appointment. After the correction, I became emotional when I saw that my hair still looked nothing like what I had originally asked for. Her response was, “Why are you getting so emotional? I don’t understand.” That was incredibly rude and dismissive. I had paid $475, had to return to correct the original result, canceled plans because of how anxious and uncomfortable I felt about my hair, and still left with a result I did not ask for. At one point, she even told me that “$475 is too much for you,” which was incredibly condescending. The issue was paying $475 for a result that looked like it had been done at home rather than a professional balayage. When I pointed out the issues, she even told me to “get a bowl and a brush and do it yourself.” I was genuinely shocked by how rude and unprofessional she was instead of taking any accountability. I tried to communicate respectfully throughout the entire process, but I was met with attitude, defensiveness, excuses, and a lack of accountability. I genuinely regret trusting this stylist with my hair and feel completely misled by the way her experience working with “dark hair” was advertised.

Love Shades Salon! Everyone is so nice and knowledgeable. Both Yessy and Brianna are amazing! I had the pleasure of both of them doing my hair. I moved to NC from FL a few years ago and could never find a place where I left LOVING my hair, that’s all changed since going to Shades. Highly recommend these ladies.
